Raising awareness of
Access Bedford and Hear Me Out
Children of a Lesser God, nominated for four Oscars, winner of one, for Marlee Matlin’s sterling performance as Sarah, a young deaf woman, who has turned her back on the world. An exceptionally intelligent yet extremely bitter young woman, Sarah is a graduate of a small New England school for the deaf, but has decided to remain there as janitor, in the confines of her world of silence; it’s safer for her to be with her own “people” than to face what she perceives as a cruel and uncaring world.
James Leeds (William Hurt) a renegade teacher with an unconventional approach to education arrives at the school and is immediately taken by Sarah who shows no interested in James at all, or anyone else, and will only communicate with him through signing, although she can read lips and even speak a little. As time goes on, James helps Sarah deal with her hatred of the world and the two fall in love, although both have to learn new ways to communicate their feelings. An incredibly emotional film that not only tells a wonderful love story but also explores the politics between men and women and deaf and hearing. Highlighting many issues our society still faces today.
This film will be subtitled.
